Rangpur district is a traditional town in the northern part of Bangladesh. The district has a glorious and varied history since ancient times. The name Rangpur is derived from the name "রঙপুর". About 80 percent of it belongs to Teesta floodplain and 20 percent to Barendra floodplain. Rivers like Teesta, Brahmaputra, Ghaghat, Yamuna, Dharla etc flow through this region. According to Hindu scriptures, the eastern part of India is known as the Kamarupa or pre-astrological kingdom, which included Vartam.
According to Ain-i-Akbari, Mughal Rangpur consisted of 3 types of administrative areas. A criminal headquarters of the Mughals was established at Ghoraghat in 1687 AD. At the same place Kakina, Kazirhat, Fatehpur came under the Mughals and after 24 years in 1711 AD. the Mughal Empire was established in the whole of Rangpur. In the beginning of the 18th century, Mughal history continued in Mahiganj. In 1765, Rangpur came under British rule under the new system after the East India Company acquired civil rights. The first peasant revolt occurred in Rangpur region in 1765. In the Sepoy Revolution of 1857, rebel Sepoys spread terror among the British rulers in the region. Later, in 1930, law disobedience movement started in different areas of Rangpur at the call of Congress. A meeting of peasant leaders of North Bengal was held here in October 1946 and the Tevaga movement began in November.
Rangpur district is bounded by Lalmonirhat on the north, Kurigram on the east, Gaibandha on the south-east, Nilphamari on the north-west and Dinajpur on the south-west. The total area of Rangpur district is 2367.84 square kilometers. The district consists of 8 upazilas, 76 unions, 3 municipalities and 1214 mauzas. Rangpur city was recognized as the district headquarters on 16 December 1769. It was recognized as a municipality in 1869.
History of Rangpur Court:
In 1808, Raja Rammohan Roy was appointed Dewan of the Collector of Rangpur. Railway line was established in Mahiganj before 1877. In 1861, the new judicial system of the British was established Court Kachari. Like the zamindars of Mahipur, the zamindars of Nawabganj built kachari houses around their homesteads. The court is filled with lawyers, a new city is built, named as Rangpur.
Liberation War: The people of Rangpur who wanted freedom started the first war on March 3. Shanku Samajdar of Rangpur was the first martyr of the Great Liberation War. Rangpur's liberation war started on March 3 with the sacrifice of 3 people. Curfew held in Rangpur from March 3 to March 5. The people of this region started an armed war on March 24. People of Rangpur woke up with a new consciousness on March 28 Sunday. On this day, people attacked the cantonment with sticks. Pakistani soldiers got angry and ambushed the general public. Brutally tortured. Rangpur is an unforgettable history created by many people with their lives.
District and Sessions Judge Court:
The first District and Sessions Judge Court was established in Rangpur in 1904. Mr. S.N. Chakroborty was the first district and sessions judge of the court after being freed from the British rule. During the great liberation war of Bangladesh, A.M. Mamith Chowdhury served in Rangpur as district and sessions judge. In 1991, a permanent bench of the High Court was established at Tajhat Zamindar's house in Rangpur.
Magistrate Court:
Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Rangpur came into operation on 1st November 2007. Started its journey with about 20 thousand cases. The first Chief Judicial Magistrate was Mr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman. Mr. Md. Suruj Sarker is currently working as Chief Judicial Magistrate.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court started its journey on 15th July 2021. The first Chief Metropolitan Magistrate was Mr. F.M, Ahsanul Haque who is still serving.
Court infrastructure:
Rangpur District and Sessions Judge Court has 3 buildings including the skyscraper chief judicial magistrate Building. There is a well-equipped record room with the oldest and oldest records of North Bengal.
Rangpur Bar Association:
Rangpur District Judge Court Bar Association is a traditional bar. Current President of Rangpur Bar Mr. A. Malek and General Secretary Mr. A. Haque Pramanik.
